what's the difference between, transgender and transvestite? i just really want to be more informed so i can school my homophobic siblings on it :]

Yay for wanting to be more informed :D

A transgender individual is someone who’s gender does not match up with their biological sex. Examples are someone who identifies a man who was born with a female anatomy, and vice versa, someone who identifies as neither man or woman, someone who identifies as both, and there are many many other varieties.

transvestite is an individual who dresses as the opposite sex for performance, sexual fetishes, etc. A transvestite doesn’t mean that they don’t identify with the gender that “matches” their sex. It’s someone like a man who was born a male who dresses up as a woman for whatever reason whether it’s performance, fun, sexual pleasure, etc.

There’s also transexual which is a term referred to a transgender individual who has undergone gender reassessment surgery to match their identified gender. (Get it? You’re transforming to a different sex).

Hope this helps(:

  3. livealifeofpassion said: Just a small correction: a person doesn’t have to have surgery to be transsexual. They just have to intend on physically altering themselves (i.e., hormones, surgery). It’s the desire, intent, or action that sets them apart from transgender people.
